BLÜCHER pipes for the Haramain high-speed rail project

Haramain Railway

The Haramain high-speed rail project is a 450 km railway line between the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

The railway is initially expected to provide transportation for three million passengers annually. They will be able to enjoy the significant architecture of Mecca and Medina, as they travel through the cities. The rail project is expected to provide fast, safe and comfortable transportas well as a boost for local business and tourism.

Five new stations to be constructed
In April 2009, Buro Happold and Foster + Partners secured the $38m design contracts for the stations through a joint venture.

The stations have a common planning strategy. However, they will have individual designs and buildings to reflect the cities they serve. There will be different arrival and departure zones as well as circulation space, including shops, restaurants, mosques, parking, a helipad and VIP lounges. Altogether, they will cover an area of more than 650,000 m2.

BLÜCHER pipes employed in prefabrication
In February 2011, the station construction contracts were awarded to Yapi Merkezi - Saudi Binladin Group Consortium (Mecca, Medina and King Abdulaziz International Airport) and Saudi Oger (Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City). The aim is to have the constructions finished in 2014. With such a lean schedule, Buro Happold and Foster + Partners decided to employ a modular approach with a high degree of prefabrication. For this purpose, they chose to work with BLÜCHER® EuroPipe.

Pipes and customized roof drains
BLÜCHER stainless steel pipes have been delivered to China, UAE and Saudi Arabia to be cast onto prefabricated 20 meter high columns which will act as roof supports for the stations and connect the roof drains to the underground piping system. BLÜCHER will supply more than 15 km of 160mm and 200mm BLÜCHER® EuroPipe as well as fittings and customized roof drains for the project. BLÜCHER MENA, based in Dubai, is handling the project in co-operation with BLÜCHER's distributor in Saudi Arabia, IMCO - Al Othman.
